Hello all? Today we will talk about another part of past tense part. And today’s topic is past continuous tense. Let’s dig into it.

Definition: Past continuous tense describes us about the action that has started in past and often continued for a small amount of time after that particular action started.

Example: I was eating my lunch and suddenly the wind started.

The subject was eating lunch while the wind started. Eating has started in past and continued before wind started.

Structure:

Subject + auxiliary verb (was /were) + verb ing form + rest of the sentence.

Example: I was eating my lunch and suddenly the wind started.

The above mentioned example will be considered as positive form of past continuous tense.

Negative Form

Now we will discuss about the negative form

Structure

Subject + auxiliary verb +not + verb ing form + rest of the sentence

Example: I was not studying on that time.

Here I is the subject, was auxiliary verb, not then rest of the sentence is on that time.

Let’s see some more examples

Asif was not writing on that time.

Kajol was not eating lunch at 3 pm.

Salman was not talking in the phone.

Let’s see how the interrogative form constructs.

Structure:

Auxiliary verb + subject + verb ing form + rest of the sentence + question mark?

Example: Was he doing that work last night?

What were you doing last night?

Were you calling me this afternoon?

What was she doing yesterday?

Now we will talk about a special part of past continuous tense.

Last week at 7, I was in Bagerhat. This sentence shows that last week at fixed time the subject was in Bagerhat. Let’s see another example.

Yesterday at this time, I was with my friend. This sentence tells us that yesterday at this time the subject was with his friend.

Rafiq was in the classroom while I was sleeping.
